Selfish and Selfless Tweeters

euroblaze Twitter BirdMany Tweeters post messages just for the sake of the passing on information that they have found interesting or userful, in very much the spirit of sharing the information with their “followers” .  On the other hand, most business-users of Twitter use the social-media platform for a specific marketing purpose, for example making an announcement or announcing a micro-event (such as product sales of xyz product reaching 100000 units).

The former category of Tweeters can be called selfless-tweeters and the latter selfish tweeters.

If you are an online product seller, it is a good idea to pass on as many selfless tweets as possible into your micro-blog.  This will result in your community members to make sure not to “filter-out” your tweets and infact keep a close eye on messages coming from you.

Of course, your social media strategy is not about passing on information to the world just for the sake of it, but rather to

  1. gain attention of your customer-community and drive new sales, while
  2. building brand and
  3. tightly integrating your customers into your business

Hence it is definitely purposeful to include selfish tweets on a regular basis; which include messages, promotions and announcements related only to your business.

Selfish Tweets, the Spice on your Twitter Feed

If the majority of your tweets which are selfless manage to capture the attention of your users, a steady and moderated inflow of selfish feeds will help you present your marketing messages to a more attentive group of users.  While they consume your selfless information regularly, they would be A) Open to recieving a few marketing messages from you and B) Pay attention to them, hence increasing the chances of following your calls-for-action.

In other words, from the marketer’s perspective, if the base of your Tweet-feed are the selfless tweets, then the regular stream of selfish streams will work as a flavor for the overall Twitter-feed.

Changing Default Meta-Keywords and Meta-Descriptions

Before taking an OXID shop live online, it is necessary to ensure that the correct meta-keywords and meta-description pertaining to your shops and products appear in the <head> section of the HTML pages of your shop.  Otherwise the Google & Co. will index only the default values pertaining to the OXID demo-data.

In order to remove the demo-keywords and add new ones, follow Customer Info > CMS-Pages > “META description Start page” and “META keywords start page”.

For influencing SEO keywords at the category and product level, please read this post: Meta Descriptions and Keywords for OXID SEO.

Snippets to Include CMS Pages into Product Descriptions

Sometimes it is necessary to include some repeating content into article-descriptions repeatedly.  For example, if you are selling a particular laptop-products with inbuilt 3G-Cards and wish to describe what 3G is to online-shop visitors, it would be cumbersome to repeat this descriptive information again and again in each article-description.

OXID offers a convenient manner to handle such repeating information – CMS Snippets!  Under Customer Info > CMS Pages, you can define repititive content as a single CMS-page and include this page’s content in article-descriptions using a SMARTY-style variable.

Steps to include CMS Snippets in Article Detail pages:

  1. Create a CMS page and make sure to provide it an ident value (ex. 3g_info)
  2. Fill the content in and save the CMS page
  3. Go to any article-detail page you wish to include the the CMS Snippet and insert the SMARTY-style variable like [{oxcontent ident=<ident_value>}] ex. [{ oxcontent ident=3g_info}]

That’s it – done!  The article-detail page will start to reflect this content dynamically.  Changes to the CMS-Snippet will automatically reflect in the article-detail page.

Shop Promotions

Aside of information-snippets, this technique can be used to run continuous marketing promotions on specific product pages.

Developer Tip

If you are kind that likes to venture into code, then try the above technique in SMARTY-templates in the /out/basic/tpl/ folder as well.
